The auto assist opening system works as promised...and the thumb knob provides more purchase that the last generation quick openening knives. The blade sits FIRMLY in the handle when opened....with no play at all...the sign of a well designed knife.

A note about the F.A.S.T opening system. This is NOT a switchblade. The thumb knob (nub really)is pushed until the blade starts to open by 15-20 degrees, then the blade pops open soldily on its own. Extremely effective one handed operation.

Although I work offshore and go through a LOT of knives...and I'm a purist (tending NOT to use semi-serrated edge blades,) after using two other smooth edge Presto knives on a lot of nylon and poly rope... I got fed up with the constant (nightly) need for sharpening the smooth edge blade. The serrated blade is FANTASTIC if you need to cut a lot of lines.

For boaters and offshore types...although we are really NOT supposed to even carry folding knives onto a working deck (We are supposed to always carry one-piece sheath knives) the Gerber Presto assisted opening system (F.A.S.T) is the next best thing. I highly recommend this knife. And don't go below the 3.5" model...the next one down really is too small for anything but opening up boxes.
