(More customer reviews)I recently purchased my S&M collapsible baton for self-defense purposes. Like all such items, I tested its durability to make sure it would not fail when I needed it the most. When I first slung it open, it was solid as a rock. I particularly liked how it stayed rigid when I wielded it in a poking motion on a solid surface. However, after a few taps on my carpet floor, The post closest to the handle vibrated loose and sunk back inside (the secondary post with the knob at the end remained rigid). I attempted to sling it open again, but since the secondary post was still fixed, it just didn't have the momentum needed to lock both posts into a rigid baton. Someone might say: "Why don't you just slam it shut on the floor and start over again?" But I would ask who has time this do this in a life or death struggle?

Now, I have watched several videos on the proper use of such a weapon. I realize they are to be wielded in precise, whipping motions and not as a full-on melee club. So when I said I tapped it on my floor, I did exactly that. I didn't act like I was chopping wood with it or anything. I would also like to point out that I am a large person, so I am fully capable of summoning the strength to sling it open properly.

I think the collapsible batons with ball bearings that lock the posts into place would be better if you planned on using it more aggressively on a regular basis. But given the quality construction of this product and its modest price, it is the best choice for people who are on a tight budget (the ball-bearing type costs $100 plus). Just be mindful that it may collapse on you when you do not want it to.
